Now Accepting WWII Memorial Donations

Dear Friend,

The Madison County Historical Society is now actively working on a memorial to honor our World War II dead.
Casualties listed represent those on active duty in the United States Army, Army Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, resulting directly from enemy action or from operational activities against the enemy in war zones from December 7,1941 to September 2, 1945.  They were either born in, lived in, are buried in, attended school in, had immediate family in, or are memorialized on a cenotaph in Madison County.

Names for the monument were taken from the "Kentucky World War II Honor List of Dead and Missing" published by the U.S. War Department in 1946, as well as a list of Madison County casualties published in "Madison County in World War II, General Marshall - Victory Report," by the Boonesboro Post #7908 of Veterans of Foreign Wars of Richmond Kentucky, reprinted by the Central Kentucky World War II Round Table. Additional names were found in newspaper articles, previously unknown headstones, and cenotaphs placed in family plots of cemeteries of Madison County.

Most of these men seem to have been farm kids who grew up in rural areas of the county or worked in the family business. Others left the county or state to find work and registered for the military draft in those locations. Therefore: their service is not credited in Madison County, and they are not recognized as Madison Countians.

It is important to remember these veterans whose ages ranged from 17 to 51 and made the ultimate sacrifice. Many have their names engraved on a memorial wall or headstone in an area of the world where they fell or went missing and never came home.

It appears that counties adjoining Madison have had memorials listing their WWII dead for some time.    With the 80th Anniversary of the ending of World War II on September 2, 2025, it’s time they should be remembered and honored in Madison County, Kentucky.

The long process of researching and writing short biographies of the 144-war dead is entering a third year.

The monument will be a black granite with white lettering. It will measure 48" x 72" and will be placed on the Madison County Courthouse lawn on the Second Street side. Madison County Fiscal Court will provide the base and concrete path around the monument with benches located in front of the monument. The estimated cost of the monument will be $12,500.

We are asking for donations to fund this very worthwhile memorial.

Donations can be made to the Madison County Historical Society,
